Mackendrick on Filmmaking by Paul Cronin: Binger a la Carte

12-10-2010

Paul Cronin, filmmaker and editor of the book On Filmmaking: An introduction to the craft of the Director by Alexander Mackendrick, presents an in-depth seminar based on Mackendrick's influential approach of filmmaking, including footage of Mackendrick's work and discussions around his ideas.

After more than twenty years in the film industry as a screenwriter, storyboard editor, and director of such memorable films as Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and the original The Ladykillers (1955), Alexander Mackendrick turned his back on Hollywood and began a new career as the dean of the California Institute of the Arts, one of the country’s most demanding and influential film schools. Established ‘with the dream of starting a tradition of academic unorthodoxy', CalArts has always viewed the ‘industrialisation' of the arts with a healthy disregard. Though it has fed Hollywood its best and brightest students from its inception, the Institute was originally conceived as ‘a facility in which students could make films as an artist paints pictures'. A philosophy that mirrors perfectly that of Binger Filmlab.
